Film Poster Analysis
The first thing I noticed about this film poster was the image. The image shows a woman looking through a window outside in a dark misty forest which confirms the genre the poster is advertising is a horror as the image is very dark and also gives off this feeling of mystery as the woman’s face is covered with a shadow which also emphasises the title of the film, ‘The Uninvited’. Which makes you as an audience want to find out who is uninvited, who is this woman? Why is she outside looking in?
The font used on this poster again is very dark and looks sinister and creepy. Also the writing looks kind of ghost like which emphases the genre of this film being a horror movie. The slogan is also written like this and adds to the atmosphere the slogan creates, ‘fear moves in’ written like this is very scary and eerie. The colours used in the font are greys and whites which makes the fonts very ghostly and supernatural. The release date is also written like this as well.
There are no actors names that are big and standout on the poster only in the small list of credits at the bottom of the poster are there any actors mentioned but I think that’s fro the best in terms of this poster as I think the whole point of this poster is to create an scary, mysterious atmosphere and I think having the actors names big across the poster would ruin that however the poster does say this film is produced by the producers who produced ‘The Ring and ‘Disturbia’ which are films that are mystery horror type films which help establish this film to be similar to those films.
There is website on the poster as well so people who are curious and want to know more about the film they can. The age of the film is also on the film which I’ve noticed on a few horror film posters.
Like with the poster for The Uninvited the first thing I notice about this poster is the image. The image shows the killers mask from the franchise, which is now considered an icon in popular culture, as it fades into a knife, which is the killer’s signature weapon. The image establishes the genre the film is which is horror as the mask is recognisable in horror and popular culture so audiences will know what the mask represents and where it comes from. Also the knife shows that this is a horror film. The image also creates a very sinister and threatening atmosphere.
The font used is the iconic font used for the rest of the scream films, with emphasis on the m in scream, but this poster is the first in the series that replaces a letter for a number. There are only two colours used in the fonts on the poster, white and red. Red is used to symbolise blood and to also standout from the black background and white writing. White is used to relate to the colour of the killer’s mask. The slogan: ‘New Decade. New Rules.’ Is used to create a new atmosphere for the film and is also relevant to the context and themes that will be explored within the film. This too is also written in red as well as the release date.
There is no website on the poster that I can see but the companies behind the production of the film are featured on the poster and I do know that Dimension, one of the companies who is responsible for making the film, have a website so if I saw this poster I would know that I can look on their website to find out any more information on the film.
